Short Guide to Buying an Emoji Domain

The first episode of ‘100 Innovations per Hour’ was all about emoji domains and I’m pleased to say that it prompted quite a bit of interest. People have been asking questions about how to register an emoji domain so I thought I would write a short guide.

If you haven’t listened to episode one yet, you can find it at Soundcloud…

First things first, you can only register emoji domains with a handful of TLDs of which the most common and supported are .ws, .fm and .to (so no .com /.org / .co.uk etc).

Also, only some domain registrars will register them for you, these include GoDaddy and (the one I use) iwantmyname

Now, you have to find available domains, I recommend starting at i♥.ws. You will find that all single emoji domains are taken but it’s pretty easy to get your hands on any combination.

It’s likely that you will notice that when you type an emoji domain into your browser such as 💯🚀.ws your browser will translate this as something that looks like this xn — rs8h82a.ws. This is something called punycode which converts your emoji into regular text. It’s that punycoded domain that you will register.

One final tip, some emojis are similar to others and so it can be hard to make sure that people end up at your domain. For example, if you want someone to land at a domain including the clock emoji, do they type ⌚ or ⏰ or ⏱ or 🕐 or ⏲ or 🕰? Best to stick to something unique such as 💯 and 🚀

That’s it for now, have fun.
